I mean Killswitch Engage's last album with Howard was a real bummer, we can say that. He sounds MUCH better now. I also think Light The Torch is far from radio-leaning, not less hard than KSE in my opinion. Now Sion out out a really nice album. It doesn't blow me away, but it has a lot to discover. First of all Rossella's voice is powerful! And second they never claimed to be a gothic band they are a band with gothic, doom, and prog elements. They have taken all those styles and mixed them together with their own style and created a whole new sound. Rossella has admitted her vocal style is really more pop influenced which is part of what gives them such a unique sound. I suggest you find a better sound system to listen to this cd on and crank it loud! Maybe even get some great headphones. Start with White Crows and Deep Breath. This cd is amazing! Every single song is fantastic! Maybe it's just not your thing but these songs are definitely not forgettable. They are absolutely incredible!m19smith65https://www.blogger.com/profile/03257275092118247950noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5304253421271402015.post-9347507861537334722020-06-13T13:32:28.387-04:002020-06-13T13:32:28.387-04:00I Disagree (sorry), I find this to be one of the m...I Disagree (sorry), I find this to be one of the most successful genre stews I have heard in quite awhile. In a time when smashing styles together is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, Poppy stands out for me. Maybe not because of the excellence of the musicianship so much as the way the transitions are made and the choice of which styles to blend. I really like a number these so called post-genre bands but all too often I think they are more talent than thought in how they craft their songs. Themes and motif are what make these kind of mash ups successful and the way Poppy folds bleakness into airy pop hooks is so consistent that it all feels pretty seamless to me. I think from reading some of your other reviews I probably would have predicted that this wouldn't be your cup of stone soup.
I also disagree that this is artsy for artsy-sake. In my view that would look more like Judgement (& Punishment) by Jinjer. This reads like a screed against the kind of easy answers and extremes of light and dark that music embodies. It swings wildly from sledgehammer sludge to pitch-thick treacle and I think deftly illustrates the machinery of that emotional trap. The listening may be exhausting at points but I think that is part of the central conceit. Create the tension to illuminate the unsustainable nature of a constant input-reactivity cycle. This is an idea that I believe carries over from Poppy's time in her previous project. In fact I think watching her mimic the evolution of new species (of A.I.) in her youttube videos explains a good deal about the alienation and despair expressed in this record. I'm not convinced this is a break from that persona or Titanic Sinclair as she asserts. But I also get it's not for everyone. I feel that Shirley's production has ruined their recent albums. I would have considered Book of Souls a classic album with a better production job. The songs are there, the production is not. The sound is flat and muddy, just like the majority of Shirley's work. I find it hard to believe that Steve Harris continues to use Shirley (but after hearing British Lions maybe not...) From what I read, Adrian Smith is not a big fan of Shirley's production jobs. I think Steve needs to pay attention to what Iron Maiden's MVP has to say..... You've mentioned Amaranthe and the comparision is natural but Amaranthe rely much more on Metalcore and Melo-Death foundations. Temperance is has been a band that has been heavily influenced by Amaranthe. However I don't know a single other metal band that uses synths so liberally as Metalite does and I think there is definitely some pioneer work here. If you have some examples about bands using synths in such a drastic way like Metalite, I'd love to hear them.

Best regards from Switzerland!
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08628856538171817718noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5304253421271402015.post-61682424632150606642019-10-24T04:46:39.856-04:002019-10-24T04:46:39.856-04:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Brayanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05838650104222584897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5304253421271402015.post-80612476806567878172019-10-08T12:57:39.714-04:002019-10-08T12:57:39.714-04:00I can't imagine any fan of Ray's being dis...I can't imagine any fan of Ray's being disappointed in the album.Chris Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09889080582478944919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5304253421271402015.post-55176677657263093392019-10-08T11:59:30.445-04:002019-10-08T11:59:30.445-04:00I also look forward to the album I have pre-ordere...I also look forward to the album I have pre-ordered.
